Korea eSIM vs SIM vs Pocket Wi-Fi: Which to Get for Your Trip
Mobile data is essential in Korea for maps (Naver Map / KakaoMap), translation and ride apps. You have three main options.
1. eSIM
- Installed by QR code — no physical card to swap, and you can set it up before you fly.
- Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. LG U+ advises checking your phone's EID by dialing
*#06#before ordering. - Best for: solo travelers with a recent phone who want data the moment they land.
2. Physical prepaid SIM
- Works with any unlocked phone, even ones without eSIM.
- Can be picked up at carrier counters in the Incheon Airport arrival halls. SK Telecom lists a 24-hour roaming center in Terminal 1 (1st floor, opposite Gate 13) and a counter in Terminal 2 (1st floor, opposite Exit 7). LG U+ lists Terminal 1 Gate F (24 hours) and Gate A (06:00–22:00) pick-up points.
3. Pocket Wi-Fi (portable router)
- One device shares data with several phones/laptops — handy for families or groups.
- Downsides: another device to charge and carry, everyone has to stay close to it, and you usually return it at the airport when you leave.
